Product Description The third edition of this successful anthology is a thoroughly updated collection of historical literatures that span the period from the British Civil War to the French Revolution.
- Fully updated, this anthology retains the historical span and range of major and minor literatures that made the first two editions so successful
- Represents many texts in their entirety and in their earliest recoverable versions
- Includes longer selections from some writers too scantly represented in the previous edition including Equiano Mary Barber and Anne Wharton
- Additional works by major authors, including Pope’s Eloisa to Abelard, and a portion of Lucy Hutchinson’s Order in Disorder.
- Writers such as Abiezer Cope, John Armstrong, and Ephraim Chambers, have been restored from the first edition
- Includes new drama selections
- Added timelines, an alternative listing of contents by theme, and updated head notes make this volume especially accessible to beginning students
Book Description The third edition of this successful anthology collects an exceptional range of historical literatures that span the period from the British Civil War to the French Revolution. This volume presents an extensive selection of canonical texts, many reprinted for from their earliest recoverable versions. Challenging the boundaries of eighteenth-century literary studies, this volume also includes many non-canonical works and many works by women writers of the period. Additionally, selections of literature from private and public life, from letters to political ballads, help to illuminate the history and cultural contexts in which the major literary works were created. This new edition includes a number of significant updates. In addition to reintroducing and extending selections from the previous editions and incorporating all new drama selections, new works by major authors have been added, including Pope's Eloisa to Abelard, a portion of Lucy Hutchinson's Order in Disorder, a pamphlet by Reeve and Muggleton, and Rochester's A Ramble in St. James Park. Additionally, timelines, an alternative list of contents by theme, and updated head notes lend added accessibility.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY November 18, 2008 I orderd this book on October 7th, 2008. A month later the book still had not shipped out. On November 2nd, I sent this company an email asking when they would ship the book as I needed it for a class. Here it is November 17th and I have yet to recieve a reply from them. Thankfully I ordered the book from another company and recieved it today. I came here to cancel this order and saw that the book is now listed as "Out Of Stock." And NOT ONCE DID THIS COMPANY EVER INFORM ME THAT MY ORDER WAS IN ANY WAY DELAYED OR OUT OF STOCK!
Great anthology April 22, 2008 This is an excellent anthology. It includes, in addition to the standard biggies such as Milton and Johnson, seldom reprinted authors such as Aphra Behn, Eliza Haywood, and Delariviere Manley, as well as some interesting contemporary documents such as court reports which aren't usually thought of as literature.
Review the book here, not the seller! October 25, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Note that the first reviewer, below, gives a one-star review of his experience buying the book, not the book itself. This seems to me an unfair (if unintentional) trashing of a pretty decent anthology.
Don't Order this Book October 8, 2005 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
Shipment was delayed again and again and was so late that I eventually cancelled this order.
