Product Description
"'The Crusade has begun'...

"There's an old myth in the Archipelago," he went on softly, shaking his head. "A legend, really...I recall it mentioned a Crusade, but those events happened seven centuries ago. We always thought it was only a story."

It has been nine years since John, Jack, and Charles had their great adventure in the Archipelago of Dreams and became the Caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica. Now they have been brought together again to solve a mystery: Someone is kidnapping the children of the Archipelago. And their only clue is a mysterious message delivered by a strange girl with artificial wings: "The Crusade has begun." Worse, they discover that all of the legendary Dragonships have disappeared as well.

The only chance they have to save the world from a centuries-old plot is to seek out the last of the Dragonships -- the Red Dragon -- in a spectacular journey that takes them from Sir James Barrie's Kensington Gardens to the Underneath of the Greek Titans of myth. With friends both familiar and new, they will travel through an extraordinary landscape where history, myth, and fable blend together to tell the oldest story in the world. And along the way, the Caretakers of the Geographica will discover that great deeds alone do not make heroes, and that growing up may be unavoidable...but growing old doesn't have to be.

4 out of 5 stars A great series! An insult to say its for children/young adults only!   November 2, 2008
Search for the REd Dragon" is a wonderful second installment in what is shaping up to be an incredible series that is worth keeping on the shelf for re-reading.
Once again we are wisked away into fantastic adventure with CSLewis, JRR Tolkien and Charles Williams, who are caretakers of a wonderful book that details the layouts and holdings of imaginary lands now seperated from "reality."
The book is full of a good mystery, plenty of colorful characters and interesting lands. This time we are trying to figure out why all of the children of the Archipelago and the Underneath have gone missing. With wonderful allusions to Greek Mythology and a strong tie to Peter Pan tales of old, this racing plot will leave you turning pages.
I must warn you though, dont step away from the book too long. The plot twists and amount of characters is a hefty sum. I came back to it after miss placing the book month ago and it took me chapters to make sense of anything again. And this is my only qualm with the book. I love all the allusions and tie-ins that Owen makes with classic literature young and ancient, but in this volume they are so numerous and the mystery so ravelled that you find yourself racing through a world you wish you could enjoy more carefully and at the end, you are satisfied but wondering a little bit of "how did we get here?"
A great book that leaves me eager to continue the series. I only hope Owen slows down to paint a richer story and weave a deeper tale....

5 out of 5 stars A rich, multi-layered fantasy   August 1, 2008
In HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS, James A. Owen introduced readers to John, Jack and Charles, three adventurers who traveled through mythology, folklore and biblical stories to save the world in their new positions as Caretakers. Nine years have passed, but this time they come together to find the thousands of missing children disappearing all over the magical world.

John, Jack and Charles are careful never to be seen together, lest their secret status is revealed. John and Charles know that nothing good has happened when they are summoned to Jack, who has been tormented by terrible dreams. They learn that they have all shared parts of those nightmares and are about to fight the reality in the Archipelago of Dreams. When they begin to discuss what is happening, a little girl with wings flies down into the garden with a letter containing the mark of the Rose. This, among other marks, tells the men that they are needed in their role of Caretakers, but the girl, Laura Glue, is not seeking them out. She is looking for the previous Caretaker, Sir James Barrie, who wrote PETER PAN.

In this story Barrie is no author, but the now ex-friend of Peter Pan. The three men bring Laura to Barrie and learn that things are not going well since they left the Imaginarium. Aven has a son who is now missing, along with all the Dragon ships. They take off in a hurry, leaving the master tome of the IMAGINARIUM GEOGRAPHICA in John's car by accident.

The men plow gamely ahead, with no map, to revisit several familiar folks from HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS, including Bert, and Bug, who is now King Artus. He helps them search in the library to find out where the children may have gone. They ask the Morgaine witches what is happening, only to learn that they are pulling out a tapestry of Time.

Jason and Medea's story takes center stage in this adventure, as well as Peter Pan, the Pied Piper and the Lost Boys. Aven turns out to be a former Lost Child, and she joins them to fight for and free the children. John, Jack and Charles think that the Winter King is dead from Book One's war, but his evil tentacles continue to reach into this story.

Even American history comes out as the Caretakers discover the Lost Colony of Roanoke. While those Lost folks have discovered an admirable racial harmony among the English and Native American settlers, they have developed some scary traits and endanger the heroes more than once.

John, Jack and Charles continue to struggle to find their gifts in their roles as Caretakers. While John may misplace the all-important book from time to time, he is still evaluating situations calmly and asking the right questions. Jack, who will never fully recover from his role in Nemo's death from Book One, sacrifices himself in this second volume to become a child again in order to discover how that point of view may bring them to the other children. Charles is hiding things about himself and his real life that come to the forefront as the men travel through Time and famous imaginary places, only to find that his actions now impress the other two Caretakers more than the trappings of reality.

There is much to feast on in this rich, multi-layered fantasy, the continuation of a wonderful series. Each page contains familiar snippets from famous stories and characters, as well as heightened action, until a thrilling conclusion. You will want to reread PETER PAN and other favorites, but this excellent title stands alone.

Enjoyed the plot and the characters. Need a fairly decent knowledge of literary figures and authors to understand all the interesting twists.

An expertly woven suspenseful eery book with all the right elements. I saw the movie before reading this , so i pictured all the actors as I read this. Very very good book.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   March 16, 2008

This sequel doesn't come up to the standard set by the first book in the series, "Here There Be Dragons". It starts off in a promising way, but then falls flat. The author is so caught up in creating a pastiche of myth and literature that the story never really comes alive. Okay, so he ties in Greek mythology and Grimm's fairy tales, but who cares? Let's hope the next book in the series is as good as the first one was.
