1 out of 5 stars Obsurd Price   January 8, 2009
Let me know when the price goes down on both the device and the electronic books. I'd rather read books. They cost less! You can't tell me that the cost electronically makes any sense, when the hard copy is cheaper. Its just not worth it. I'm very interested in getting the device, but the cost is just outlandish.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the clumsy- lacks durability   January 8, 2009

I received my Kindle as a Christmas gift which means I have had it for only 15 days as of this writing. I love the device in that it is easy to read and the download time is amazingly fast. The problems I have are with the device's durability and with Kindle Support. On day 14 of ownership, I knocked my Kindle off the coffee table. It was in its protective case and it fell a mere 16 inches onto a carpeted floor. I immediately noticed that after the fall there was a small horizontal "line" across the top of the reading pane and a vertical line on the left side of the pane. The letters that should appear where these lines are are not completely visible. I contacted Kindle Support via phone today and was told that if I want a replacement Kindle it will cost me another 180 dollars! I am not about to spend another 180 dollars on a device that may break again the next time it is dropped. It seems to me that this device should be more durable. I have dropped my cell phone and even my laptop and have never seen any damage. Had I dropped it down a flight of stairs or onto a concrete sidewalk I wouldn't expect Amazon to replace it, but to fall a mere 16 inches on to carpet and become damaged is unacceptable for something that costs as much as the Kindle does.

5 out of 5 stars Love it   January 8, 2009
I saw the Oprah show talking about it and immediately knew I wanted it. I had my daughter buy it for my husband to give me for Christmas. I bought a book that day and started away. Love that you can change the typeface. The buttons can be a problem, but I've found if you always go to the home page before closing down, you eliminate the problem of pushing the page turner when turning on the unit. That solved it for me totally. The battery life seems very good. I also wish I knew how many pages there were and what page I was on. I miss turning pages of a book to see where the next chapter begins to decide if I keep reading or not.
Those things are minor in my eyes.
I am flying over the weekend and am exited to have it on the plane and on my vacation.
If more finally come in, I probably will buy them for my 2 adult kids.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely AWESOME...   January 8, 2009

I really have to wonder about people that have given this device a bad review...but to each his own.

I must admit I was a bit cautious because of the button issue everyone mentions, however, after using it for months (with and without the cover) I find it a non-issue. Yeah, I've accidently hit the buttons, but then I can't tell you how many times I've lost my place in a paperback.

I actually find I can read a book faster because turning pages is a snap--no readjusting the book for a different side of the page with each turn, no need to dog-ear pages (which I abhor) or search for a bookmark...just put in sleep mode or turn off.

I don't especially like to search for books to buy on the Kindle, but in a crunch it works. I usually go online and search and buy from there and then just turn on the Whispernet and let them download.

If I could ask for any changes I would like the ability to make folders to sort books by genre or author; definately not a deal maker/breaker.

I don't get the 5 days of battery life specified, I get about 2 with Whispernet turned off, but then again not that big a deal for me. I just plug it in when I go to bed.

I like the fact that I didn't have to buy a separate subscription to use the Whispernet and I was surprised that I even got a signal since I live in the sticks...there again, that wouldn't have been a deal breaker--I was prepared to download books from my computer. Still easier than waiting for a delivery or running to the local store (which is about 12 miles away).

Ok, so it's a little pricey and I think the books should be a little cheaper since there is little cost in converting to digital and they can't be sold or traded, but I'm really not very good at reselling my books anyway.

I have absolutely no use for pictures or color since the books I read have neither--the e-ink is fantastic, easy to read, easy to forget you aren't reading an actual book--for those that want a backlight go buy a book light; I sure don't want to be reading a computer-like screen.

Regardless, even with the FEW flaws, the Kindle is fantastic! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or buy another one.

WAY TO GO AMAZON!!

I am really enjoying my Kindle. I have had issues with the battery but
Amazon has been great with their help. I will continue to use it and by electronic books!!!
