Product Description Superb collection by arguably the greatest Irish folk artists.
Amazon.com The tracks on The Best of the Chieftains are drawn from The Chieftains 7, The Chieftains 8, and Boil the Breakfast Early--three of the band's recordings from the late 1970s. This was the period when former Bothy Band and Planxty flautist Matt Molloy and vocalist/bodhran player Kevin Cunniffe joined up and finally fulfilled Paddy Maloney's vision of what the band should sound like. It also marks the last time the Chieftains recorded pure, unadulterated traditional Irish music. Not long after making these albums, the band set off on a new career that has included numerous movie and TV soundtracks, collaborations with pop stars of various stripes, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Although some purists decry the band's later attempts at crossover, the near perfection of tracks such as the exquisitely performed suite of dance tunes "Chase Around the Windmill" show that the Chieftains had taken the old tunes about as far as they could go. The group may have gone on to make better-selling records, but they never topped the traditional grace and charm of the songs on The Best of the Chieftains. --Michael Simmons

The Best of the Chieftains March 20, 2010 Kim Murray (Hunter Valley, Australia) This CD went down well (along with others of similiar theme) on recent St Pats Day
The Day started with a gathering of Family/Friends at Harrigans (Irish)Pub, at Pokolbin. Service is aways good for us, as my youngest daughter (Rebekah) is one of the Chefs there. By 1900hrs the Gathering was the BBQ in my backyard, we had been quite mellow by now. I think the daughter must have drove us here. However, amongst the celebrations of family/friends I do remember the singing/gigging to the CDs of the Chieftains.
Thankyou
Kim
p.s. I hope all those proud to be of Celtic descent, also had a happy/safe St Pats Day with Family/Friends.
Best is RIGHT October 19, 2009 Patricia Matteson "The Best of the Chieftains" is a great collection. I am not qualified to say whether the selection really is the best of their works but the depth and range of tunes is wide; each tune is terrific. I would recommend this CD very highly. I need more time to listen, absorb and learn the histories and lyrics before I could give a more detailed review.
Very Disappointed October 3, 2008 C. Privette (Shoreacres, TX United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have always loved the Chieftans and owned many of their tapes/cd's and have never been disappointed until now. This cd is definately not the best of anything they've ever done. I've never even heard of these songs. Wish I could get my money back.
